A Sad Mystery

Over the last three weeks we’ve watched outside of our dining room window as a momma robin built her {pitiful} nest…

robin in nest

laid and guarded four delicate blue eggs…

and got a peek at our first baby robin on Mother’s Day.

The next day I peeked and saw two little birdies. Later that evening three had hatched.

I was VERY saddened to peek into the nest the next morning to get a glimpse of this…

empty robin nestCompletely empty. Not even a hint of what happened. Nothing around the tree. Nothing suspicious.

Just empty.

I’m pretty sure that the sobbing from our kids could be heard around our neighborhood. So very sad.

  6. Oh no! How awful - the kids must be devastated. I suppose now you find yourself in the position of explaining the opposite end of The Circle of Life...

  7. I know you may think the worst. However, Robins have been known in the past to move their entire nest. Look it up for a great home school tidbit. It is very possible that if she was threatened she could have moved them all.... Just a thought :)

  9. Same thing happend with a bird's nest by us. I found one of the little ones later in the garden, a friend of mine raised it and it is a beautiful little bird now! Hopefully she just moved. So sad.

  11. Jenn's comment had me curious, so I googled, and everything I read said they CAN'T move their babies. If you find research that shows they can, I'd love to know! So sad...
